As part of the US Federal Railway Administration (FRA) program to promote innovative technologies for high speed railways, Amtrak Railway, Harsco Rail Consulting, and Senior Researchers from the Universities of Delaware and Colombia assessed the impact of Neoloy Geocell subgrade stabilization of an especially problematic section of high volume track on Amtrak’s North-East corridor route that continuously fouled ballast and required frequent maintenance. Analysis of Track Quality Indices (TQI) track geometry showed that NPA (Novel Polymeric Alloy) Geocells are a highly effective solution. They reduced pressure at the ballast/subgrade interface by 50% and reduced track maintenance cycles by a factor of at least 6x, resulting in a very high ROI and significant savings in track maintenance.
